Does God have a plan for my life?

This is a great question, especially with the New Year beginning. The Bible contains many wonderful truths in this area. While this topic will not be exhausted in this column, I pray that I can at least give you some guidelines to begin your search.

God provides a general path for all of His children. These guidelines are found in the Bible. For example, God has clear instructions concerning marriage, finances, attending church, and general behavior as a Christian. While you may read what a Godly marriage should be, you will not find out specifically who you should marry. This must be discovered as part of the specific plan that God has for you. These plans were custom designed by God before the creation of the world (Ephesians 3:11). No one else shares your plan! This proves that there are no “worthless no-bodies” in the kingdom of God. Each one of us is a “somebody” with a divine destiny! When this truth is understood and embraced, a person will experience great satisfaction and life will become an exciting journey with a specific purpose (Jeremiah 29:11).

So how do you find out what God has for you? First, become familiar with His Word. This will give you the general guidelines. Next, when faced with a specific decision, go to God in prayer. The Bible says that “I (God) know My sheep and My sheep hear My voice (John 10:27).” The more time you spend seeking God, the more sensitive you will become in hearing God as He speaks to your heart. You will learn to be guided by a sense of “knowing” and peace when you’ve made the right decision. Two words of caution; your decision must line up with God’s word (God will never contradict His Word) and don’t make a decision (without going to Him first) and expect God to bless it afterwards!

So as you purpose to discover God’s plan for your life, remember, God desires to reveal it to you (Psalm 32:8) and that it is “exceedingly, abundantly above all that we could ask or think (Ephesians 3:20)!” Knowing that God’s hand is on your life should give you a great sense of value. Being armed with this truth should enable you to go into the New Year with a plan and a direction!
